In 1957 Jim Lovegrove joined an expedition to the South Atlantic organised and lead by the English mountaineer Bill Tilman. Answering an advert in the Barmouth Times which read ‘Hands wanted for long voyage in small boat: no pay, no prospects, not much pleasure’ he joined the crew of “Mischief”, a 40ft Bristol Channel Cutter built in 1908.
Major H.W.Tilman was a contemporary and co-climber of Spencer Chapman and Eric Shipton (one of Jim’s neighbours when he lived in North Wales). He served in the Royal Artillery in World War I and was introduced to rock climbing in the Lake District in 1929. During the next decade he climbed many peaks in Africa and South East Asia. He climbed Nanda Devi without oxygen in 1934 and every other well known peak bar the Matterhorn.
During World War II he saw action on the beaches of Dunkirk and in North Africa. He was parachuted into northern Italy behind enemy lines to help the local partisans. He is remembered and honoured in the town of Belluno which he helped save from destruction by the Nazis. The grateful citizens of Belluno gave him the keys to the city and named a road after him, Via Magg Harold William Tilman.
Mischief Goes South
The 1957 voyage began in Lymington, Hampshire. Mischief ‘s passage took her to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands, Cape Verde Islands, Salvador, Bahia (Brazil), north of Tristan da Cunha, Cape Town, Cape of Good Hope, Durban, Beira (Mozambique), Moroni (Comero Islands), Aldabra (Seychelles), Aden, Suez, Port Said, Gibraltar, Lymington.
After crossing the Atlantic from west to east they ran into a storm south of South Africa. Mischief took on water and they put into Durban for repairs.  The story of this voyage of 1957-58 is told in the book “Mischief goes South“.

In 1966, after a succession of eventful and successful voyages in the high latitudes of the Arctic, Tilman and his pilot cutter Mischief head south again, this time with the Antarctic Peninsula, Smith Island and the unclimbed Mount Foster in their sights. Mischief goes South is an account of a voyage marred by tragedy and dogged by crew trouble from the start. Tilman gives ample insight into the difficulties associated with his selection of shipmates and his supervision of a crew, as he wryly notes, ‘to have four misfits in a crew of five is too many’.
The second part of this volume contains the author’s account of a gruelling voyage south, an account left unwritten for ten years for lack of time and energy. Originally intended as an expedition to the remote Crozet Islands in the southern Indian Ocean, this 1957 voyage evolved into a circumnavigation of Africa, the unplanned consequence of a momentary lapse in attention by an inexperienced helmsman.
